When and how we respect our life…

We, Egyptians, go to other countries either on short or long visits… to work or to stay… we have nothing but to respect the laws and traditions of those societies… we dare not go through the traffic lights… we dare not bypass the road lane… we dare not dodge between the cars… or go fast from the far right to the far left at the entrances of tunnels or bridges not paying any respect for the line of cars waiting to enter the tunnel or go over the bridge.

I can continue narrating the acts that we dare not do including using the toilette siphon after a certain hour at night, throwing away cigarettes’ ends in the streets, beating carpets on the balconies’ walls, pouring the dirty cleaning water from the balconies…etc.

Moreover, we excel at work abroad… we bear a lot of difficulties that if we bore them in our homeland, we would have been in another status… as the peasant leaves his fertile land that is gravity-irrigated and goes to work in a farm deep far in the desert… also, his work there in not only limited to cultivation and farming but extends to other tasks including guarding, cleaning and submitting to the employer’s orders without discussing… he is the same peasant that accepts to work in tiles’ factories or digging ground wells by hand in the worst conditions of hot and moist weather… if that peasant exerted half this effort in our fertile old land or the other newly-reclaimed one, he would have become better-off.

The same thing applies to the rest of higher-rank positions reaching to the engineer, journalist, doctor and university professor… as everyone is keen to commit to the rules, excel, and stir no troubles or excuses of not receiving a reasonable salary comparable to the effort he exerts.

Perhaps the only negative practice that Egyptians may have abroad is their lack of experience regarding what we can call “rules of existence in diaspora”… I here mean the inter-relations among individuals and families of the Egyptian community… and between the Egyptian community and the rest of communities… also with the authorities… as it was always said that the worst troubles the Egyptian may have in work or abroad come from his own fellow Egyptians… also that the Egyptians are not good at helping or supporting each other… things even went worse after January, 2011 revolution as the phenomenon became clearer when dispute and disagreement went to a level that does not distinguish between Egypt; homeland and state… and between the regime, government and political orientations.

The amount of negative acts that stick to us; Egyptians inside our country and that have to do with our daily behavior and our relation to what lies outside our homes starting from the door entrance… the place of the garbage bin or bag… the stairs… the entrance of the building… not to mention our relation to the street starting from the way of parking cars… piling dust next to the pavement… breaking traffic lights and rules… driving in the opposite direction… the way we deal with the humble police conscript standing in the boiling hot or freezing cold weather… throwing cigarettes’ butts and empty packets from cars’ windows along with used Kleenex, sandwiches’ plastic bags, fruits’ pealed skin especially bananas, mandarins and oranges… also, the audacity of some to spit and hawk from the window or by opening the door while waiting at the traffic light feeling no shame or commitment to the public hygiene while the car cassette is set loud with religious supplications or reciting Quran… or even ugly voices shouting uglier lyrics and melodies.

I have always thought and discussed with others over the importance of diligent hard work to change people behavior in Egypt… as miss-behavior has nothing to do with the economic situation or the social class… for example, one can see some driving a more than a million pound-worth car and wearing gold rings and cufflinks and maybe also gold necklace around their necks while they commit the worst acts of behavior.

The very logic question now is: can we pour tons of inks over tons of papers to publish newspapers, magazines and books and along with this spending billions of pounds over satellite channels to talk about democracy, Dawaa discourse and history eras starting from the time of Salah ed-Din to the time of July, 1952 revolution and Nasser… etc., while there is no real scientific and practical planning for a comprehensive societal cultural renaissance in a way that can make us behave as if Cairo is a Gulf country, European or American city where we can never think of committing something that may break the laws or customs?

In my opinion, this is an essential crucial case in our life as Egyptians… because the image we give to other non-Egyptians; whether our Arab brothers, foreign friends or those who are not brothers or friends but ordinary visitors who came as tourists or for investment… this image contains those outrageous behaviors that reveal the cultural and civilization deterioration we suffer today.

I wonder when the school teacher can accompany her class of the age range of five or six years in a journey to teach them ethics and rules of traffic in the street and how to deal with traffic lights, signs of pedestrians’ lanes and how to cross the square from one side to the other in a proper way… and how can that child who has been taught the ethics and rules of traffic affect his father the driver; either driver of a cab or a wealthy owner of a Mercedes car to pay his attention to his miss-behavior and ask him why he does this?

There are many other questions like when and how can we respect our homes, allies and streets… when will we respect our life and deal with our country as sacred?

Does history repeat itself?

I continue writing about Talaat Harb and challenging colonization… the role of Bank Misr in industrialization in the time span from 1920 to 1941 based on the highly important reference rich in its information and in-depth analyses “Challenging colonization: Bank Misr and Egyptian industrialization 1920 – 1941" written by Eric Davis, translated by Hisham Soliman Abdel-Ghaffar, revised and introduced by Mr. Dr. Ibrahim Fawzi; the one who attracted my attention to the importance of rereading the reference especially in this time in our country’s history wishing that those elite bunch possessing power in Egypt; whether the wealthy, businessmen, officials in charge or others, may make use of the lessons learnt from that era in our history.

Here, I would like to appeal to the officials in charge of Bank Misr right now and ask them to publish this book on a wide scale in Maktabet al-Osra’ publications series or other one so that every Egyptian, who wants to learn and look up to great pioneers like Talaat Harb and those who helped him, can read it… in doing such thing, Bank Misr would be returning part of the favor of that man who took the responsibility of establishing this bank.

The book author says that the support offered from students’ groups and agricultural bourgeoisie to Bank Misr resulted in that the merchants all over Egypt started forming commercial chambers in the wake of 1919 revolution… despite no evidence was given that these institutions were immersed in the promotion for buying Bank Misr’s shares, these commercial chambers were fierce in their call for boycott… they issued several statements calling for withdrawing deposits from the foreign banks and directing them to Bank Misr… they also asked for replacing Al-Ahli or the National Bank with Bank Misr since the former was controlled by the English as the very important state bank…

Also, comparisons between Al-Ahli or the National Bank enjoying the high status and Bank Misr that was just established contributed to reinforcing the position of the latter to people in general… they also helped undoubtedly in encouraging the Egyptians hesitating; those who were known to prefer investing in real estate than bank deposits in saving their money… such comparisons encouraged them to buy shares and have bank accounts in Bank Misr… Abdel-Maged al-Ramalli; secretary of Cairo commercial chamber, confirmed that if every Egyptian bought a single share of Bank Misr capital, the whole yield would be enough to fund the industrial projects Bank Misr was hoping to do.

If we added to the commercial chambers what the “agricultural bourgeoisie” did, that bourgeoisie that became more aware of its interests and so it established strong pressure group in 1920; that was the public Egyptian agricultural syndicate, to practice pressure over the government to follow policies where there interests are taken into consideration… adding to this also the orientation to establish and strengthen the cooperative movement… we would realize that the process of establishing a national bank has turned into what we may call an epic of a conscious national act where the participants in it became aware of their interests and of the conflict with the foreign capitalism.

However, things did not go well all the time as the conflict between “national” and “foreign” led the foreign capital to adopt tricks and tactics supporting it in such conflict… and so, many foreign companies tended to re-register themselves as Egyptian companies to make use of the laws and policies applied by the patriotic governments at that era…

Those companies meant to attract a number of the high class members… some other companies meant to depend on those who were granted their Egyptian nationality recently especially those of the Greek, Levant, Armenian and Jewish origins… then those foreign companies, which had re-registered as Egyptian companies, sought the help of political activists at that time… especially ex-ministers and deputy ministers; those experts in the governmental affairs and complications of laws related to the work of the Egyptian joint-stock companies.

Some of those sought for help were owners of vast areas of lands despite they did not inherit any of those lands… actually, their ownership of all those lands came from practicing politics and assuming public job positions during which they usually received bribes as “supplements for their income”.

Here, the author stops at a remarkable phenomenon and which is almost recurring since the beginning of the last century to date; that is the class resulting from the Egyptian bourgeoisie – meaning those who did not decent from families enjoying wealth or power and their grandfathers were not villages’ mayors… but actually most of their fathers were humble farmers and government employees – this class or sector was the most subordinate to the foreign capital.

In such regard, author Eric Davis wrote a very serious paragraph saying: “members of the Egyptian bourgeoisie who collaborated with the foreign capital during the thirties of the twentieth century should be looked at by using terms of the new occupation… as they represented a front hiding behind the principle controller in the companies under scrutiny… on the surface, it looked as if the Egyptians became more powerful in controlling their economy than it was the case in reality… also, a number of the members of those class were the ones who turned the tables against the financially-distressed companies of Bank Misr in 1939”!

My stating exclaiming question now: does history repeat itself?... do we witness the same phenomenon again in Egypt with the political activists since 2000 to date… those who turned the tables against the national principles when they accepted to receive foreign funds and commit to the agendas of those funding them overseas?

About drama and history

Those who work in the research field in history and other humanitarian sciences know the difference between sources and references as they depend on both of them in getting their scientific material… also, there is no absolute acknowledgment of what any of them may contain but actually both are subject to scrutiny, criticism and comparison.

The source can be a spoken account given by one of those who took part in the events or was an eye-witness… it could also be a journalistic material published to cover or comment over the event when it happened… furthermore, it can be an official document issued from an institutional entity… moreover, it can be personal journals for one of the decision makers or someone in connection with them… etc. All those are subject to internal and external criticism and to other rules of scientific research disciplines.

As to references, these are the researches and studies that tackled what happened with study, analysis, detecting contexts and surroundings, reading results and drawing conclusions… references, in turn, are subject to criticism and one cannot take what they contain as if it is the absolute truth.

Usually the one interested in studying a phenomenon or a time period is advised to read the reference starting from its title then directly its index and the list of its sources and references… if it was discovered that that reference is not well-structured in its research; meaning in its chronological order, thematic unity, or both… and it was clear that this reference mixed between what should be mentioned in the core of the research and what should have been listed in the drafts and indices… and that it adopted an obvious outrageous bias towards a certain opinion or even towards the givens of its point in an attempt to get around the scientific material with the aim of proving what the author wants regardless of the reliability or veracity of such opinion… further, it turned out that this reference depended on sources that are not of the first degree and on other references that are questionable regarding their relative objectivity… then, that reference is not credible to rely on.

Here at this point in specific, comes the fault in drama in general and in historic drama in particular… as a certain director may say that he depended on tens of references to get his material for his drama work without knowing that it is not about the number of references he referred to… and not about how much they weigh in kilograms; meaning the number of papers… but actually it is about whether those references are credible according to the standards we mentioned some of them above.

It is really strange that some of those sources are still alive and one can have their spoken account and ask them to provide what can prove the veracity of such account… and after this subjecting this account of that source to internal criticism to see how well-connected and consistent it is with the sequence of events… and before all this, how mentally and psychologically-fit this source is as he/she may be too old and is suffering from oblivion or Alzheimer… and perhaps he/she is trying on purpose to hide parts of the truth of what happened… after this, if we apply external criticism by comparing this account with other ones and by verifying the authenticity of the documents this source is providing… then this source becomes even more important than some references.

Dear reader… you can imagine a researcher who is already known to have chosen a certain topic in order to belittle those who participated in it… and to prove for himself and for those who encouraged him the veracity of the hypotheses he made, the sayings he promotes, the allegations he gives or the lies he wants to wrap in a dress of truth… also, one finds this researcher disclaiming the efforts he received from the one who supervised his research and tried to guide him as possible… that supervisor who tried to adjust the researcher’s distorted research discipline and what he got is that his researcher student abstained from acknowledging him – like what happened with that one whom they had as an auditor for a controversial TV series – when he published his research… that his professor disowned him in public… can a researcher with such description, either on the academic or moral levels, be trusted?

Criticism in research disciplines is similar to the knowledge branch of studying Islamic Hadith… I here mean al-Jarh wa al-Ta’dil or discrediting and accrediting… which in turn is associated to what is called Ilm ar-Regal or science of narration or biographical evaluation… as it was not enough to attribute the account or opinion to X of prophet Muhammed’s companions… but there was a whole scrutinizing search done over this narrator… meaning whether he existed or not… and how mentally, morally and behavior-wise fit this narrator was… and if he is trusted or not.

I believe many of those who are supposed to belong to the field of research, post graduate studies and teaching professions in university should be subjected to evaluation starting from their fluency not in the foreign languages related to their researches but in their Arabic language; meaning their mother tongue as some of them who became even university professors cannot speak a single correct Arabic sentence.

If someone had the chance to attend the discussion of a PhD or master’s degree, he would be appalled by the crimes committed against Arabic language… so one can imagine who things are when the references and sources are written in English or French especially if the research deals with an era or subject that definitely has documents or periodicals related to it in English or French.

Some will say they can seek the help of translators… this is possible… but the problem is that the translator is usually not aware of the whole image of the subject related to the document… and so, he produces an automatic translation empty of any perception of the context and what lies beyond words.

In my opinion, the relation between art works of series and films, and historic events will stay complicated and a matter of dispute… especially if those art works are connected to the current political events and go in the heart of the running conflict in the society, region and world.

The enemy

Enmity has been always there associated with mankind since the first moment of creation… its circle even widened from the Satan to include children and spouses as they too could be enemies as stated in the Quranic verse “O you who have believed, indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon and overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

By time, enemies, enmity and aggression – and all that connect to this theme – have become a subject of research… and even innovation in many knowledge branches that may include psychology, social psychology, history, economics, international relations, military sciences and other… there are even other sciences that may help in this issue too like chemistry, physics, mathematics, medicine and all that connect to the arms industry, information technology and other.

However, the most important thing in such aspect – as I think – is an enemy of special nature… more dangerous than all foreign enemies no matter strong or powerful they are… that enemy is the collapse of the national immune system… that immune system that if we broke it down to its elements, we would find the nation’s intellect, conscience, history, civilization, culture, cohesion, balance, education, health and its awareness of its position and present time.

In politics they say there is no such thing as a lasting enmity or lasting friendship as to relations with the foreign powers. However, there are different kinds of international relations that are shaped according to the nation’s geographical position and role… in many times, the geographical situation is a reason for fighting among the foreign powers and competition in the regional area… many do not pay attention to such thing… those many are the people who do not adopt this rule of lasting enmity or lasting friendship in their vision for their relations with other nations… because it is not about unfriendly or friendly relations but rather about determining the sources and possibilities of danger that may attack the nation.

But if it was proven that the nation – due to its geographical position and role – is exposed to a constant danger from certain regional and international powers… and there are evidences in history that corroborate this… then it is more right to talk about the sources of danger and not the sources of aggression… as a result, determining the foreign enemy is related to determining where the foreign danger is and its nature… only then we can know who the enemy is.

If we made a connection between the first enemy – that is the collapse of the national immune system – and the second foreign one, we would discover that all powers that were in enmity with Egypt and wanted to undermine its role, destroy its powers and prevent it from achieving progress, actually started by first working on attacking its national immune system in order for the Egyptian cultural civilization complex structure that was accumulated throughout hundreds of centuries to decompose… so that it would become like water when exposed to certain effects, it will decompose to its basic elements; meaning Oxygen and Hydrogen… at that time, there will be no water… you will not be able to quench your thirst as some Oxygen and some Hydrogen will do you no good when you are thirsty.

I know this was a long introduction but I had to write it… now we can say that the historical evidences confirmed that the foreign danger attacking Egypt always came from the east and north… also most of the civilization and cultural interaction that enriched Egypt’s culture came from the same directions… while there were little danger and interaction from the south and west.

And so, the ancient Egyptians, during the flourishing times of the Egyptian role, outlined the borders of the nation’s security both geographically and politically – meaning geo-politics-wise – as extending from the African Horn to the reversed sources of water; meaning Tigris and Euphrates… it is known that they were called reversed waters since they run from the north to the south while the River Nile runs from south to north. Consequently, the Egyptian nation’s defense was always directed towards the Red Sea and south to beyond Mandeb Strait… and towards the north-east; meaning Sinai, Palestine and Taurus Mountains… in order to protect the nation against dismantle, fragmentation, looting and foreign occupation.

Also foreign invasion waves since the Persians, Tatars, Moghuls, Crusades and the Zionist enemy… all came from this geographical field determined by our ancient ancestors as borders of our national security… and despite the modern colonial powers that invaded Egypt came from the north like the French and English, they themselves realized they cannot impose their rule in Egypt unless they besiege it and undermine its national security by controlling the Levant area which geo-politically includes modern Syria, Lebanon and before them Palestine and eastern Jordan

Is there any more telling or clearer way to determine the sources of danger and hence the aggression and consequently determine who the enemy is?... in simple words, the enemy is the one who always tries to control Egypt’s north-eastern gate and disconnect its land and marine routes to the areas that represent its security circle… and it happened that those areas are our Arab world and nation.

I will not give more details in this issue of dangerous domestic enemy; that is the collapse of the national immune system anymore as the details are countless and impossible to list in an article.
