Sultan Al-Qasimi…”about Egypt and culture”

For many considerations that I believe are objective… with some of them have to do with the composition and stances of Shiekh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammed Al-Qasimi; ruler of Sharjah Emirate and member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates’ rulers… and with some others to do with Egypt; its role, status and hope… also, these words of Shiekh Al-Qasimi, which I am going to excerpt, are inseparable of the current circumstances our country is going through… these circumstances which I think are very critical… so I ask your permission to excerpt some texts of Sheikh Al-Qasimi from an interview of him published in the UAE’s newspapers on October 24, 2016.

Shiekh Al-Qasimi talked about the role of the Arab Republic of Egypt and said: “Egypt’s nature is different to that of other nations… as the situation in Egypt now is like the body that is recovering from some issues it suffers… and this recovering requires a lot of efforts… because the population is not few… 90 million people is a big nation regarding the problems and challenges Egypt faces from abroad; from the east, south and north… the president of the Arab Republic of Egypt; Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi is a man of responsibility and he wants to find solutions… he is like the surgeon with a scalpel in his hand to cut the body open… not to cause pain; but to remedy… remedy here, amidst these circumstances and current events, needs patience… and so, I assure you that Egypt is coming back and strong… but after we are done with the calamity in Syria and Iraq… in Egypt, we have all the good… in Egypt, we have an army that can defend the Arab nation… Egypt can run ten million fighters with one military order… so, I tell you… in Egypt, we can find the supporting back and security…

We could see that in other countries, enemies were able to miss with their compositions and divide whole nations into Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen, and Yazidis… in doing so, they were able to dismantle them like Israel hopes… but they could and will not do this in Egypt… because the Egyptian composition has been always, throughout history, free of such rifts… despite what Egypt’s enemies did to hit its cohesive composition, they were and will not be able to do what they did to the other nations.

This shall tell us about the reason why our enemies succeeded in dismantling some countries… because there was no common factor gathering the peoples of these nations… and so, we should stick to the most important factor we have in common among us… that is the Arab Nationality… so that we can be able to protect each other… and so, again I say, Egypt is coming back”.

For many years, Dr. Sultan has assigned himself the task of reviving the Arab culture… and so, he speaks of his cultural project saying: “at the beginning of the Union of the Emirates, we had education, commerce, agriculture, fishing and many fields available in the state… but the culture was not there… because the role of culture is to add… it’s not a source itself… I have my project which I have been working on since 1982… and I am still going on developing it… Sharjah has something to add everyday in the cultural domain… I myself follow the smallest details of these events… I have my own program regarding this… this project is not only in the Emirate of Sharjah or the state of the UAE… my cultural project is the Arab culture… and so, if I want to achieve any renaissance in such domain, I have to initiate this renaissance in the backbone of this region… and Egypt is the backbone in many fields… any work faces problems… consequently, work requires stability… also, work shall be grasped through repetition… and so, I have been working very hard in this cultural project since tens of years until this moment… but I am telling you, I have not achieved what I want yet… we should not hasten making culture… because culture is about accumulations that have to be perceived by the human mind… and so, we have to train the human mind on such discipline”.

Another text I excerpt of Shiekh Dr. Sultan Al-Qasimi: “despite all the current events that have caused depression to many people, I do not feel depressed… because when we look at the life of nations, we realize very well that what is happening now is an emergency… and there have always been many emergencies through time; whether bad or good, as time is changing like the sea… we shall not fear these changes… despite they sometimes bring death to our sons and throw their bodies on the European shores, we should be patient and strong… as what we have been through during the time of Mongols and Turks was much painful than this”.

This was the vision of a man who sees the whole picture in Egypt and the Arab nation from a specific angle; that is the perspective of the man-in-charge who knows well what responsibility means …

Some may get surprised that this Arab ruler is optimistic despite all the gloomy depression looming over the region… but going through the context of his words about the secret of such optimism, we find ourselves before a vision that is based, first, second and last, on culture… culture here is about building the human and making balance between the enlightened mind and the alerted sensitive conscience… the corner stone of such culture is “Egypt is coming back” and “it is the base in any future plans”…

I have known Shiekh Dr. Sultan Al-Qasimi since 37 years exactly… and so, I am not about to narrate what he and Sharjah offered for culture; whether in literature, arts or history… by providing sources, references, and documents… also, what was offered for motherhood, childhood, women and youth in more than one country… moreover, what was offered in certain fields in our beloved Egypt and other Arab countries… since he utterly refuses to talk about this…

I remember his clear decisive answer regarding such thing when some tried to publish what was offered to Egypt during his visit… he gave the example of a noble man who was tied and then his enemies asked people to pelt him with stones… then those who love him came and throw him with flowers while crying, thinking they declare their love to him this way… but actually, this is not true because pelting is pelting… even if by flowers.

I slept on pavements

In Saint Bachomuos El-Shayeb Monastery in Luxor, I sat to the ground with those ringing the bells and singing hymns. In the Monastery of Saint Pishoy, I went deep into the monastery until I reached the sacred place where monks must kneel at entering. Father Sedrak, later became archbishop of Jerusalem may he rest in peace, was at the monastery at that time. We had discussions I believe were very rich. In Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral, I had a three-hour discussion with Pope Shenouda III. It was such a great spiritual and mental experience.

In the yards of mosques of al-Badawi, ad-Dessouqi, ash-Shazli and al-Qenawi and on the pavements surrounding the mosques of Ahl al-Bayt like Imam al-Hussain, Sayyidah Zainab or Um Hashem the virgin, Sayyidah Nafisa, the one who read Quran seventy times in the place where she was later buried in and whom Imam ash-Shafi’i was her student, there I wore shabby clothes and went bare-footed watching manifestations of Shath over the faces of the poor… or once can say the loving dervishes.

I once had an official invitation to visit Iraq. The one who met me there blamed me for refusing past invitations he offered me when he was an ambassador for Iraq in Egypt. He asked me anxiously: “Have you come this time to meet Mr. Vice-President?” He meant Taha Yassin Ramadan. I said: “No… to meet someone more important.” The man got alerted and asked cautiously and respectfully: “Do you mean that you’re gonna meet the president?” He meant Saddam Hussein– May the president and the vice-president rest in peace –I said: “No… more important one.” The man got annoyed for he thought I was making joke of a serious matter. I immediately said: “First of all, I came to visit Imam Ali, Imam Junayd of Baghdad and al-Hallaj!”

Indeed in the day when I arrived, I headed in the afternoon to the shrine of Junayd and next to him was “Sirri Saqti”. Next to them lies the shrine of prophet Moses’s assistant whose name as written was Yusha’ ibn Nun. Next to the shrines of Junayd and Sirri Saqti was a palm tree with the most delicious dates I ever tasted dropping from it. Also there was a natural spring whose water was of the purest I ever drank. After this, I went to Imam Mousa al-Kazem but couldn’t go to Najaf.

I also went close to Ar-Rawda Ash-Sharifa of prophet Muhammed– peace be upon him –in Medina. There, I cried, supplicated to God and begged him in pain asking for a life!

Whenever I imagine our beloved Egypt without its guardians whose ancestors go back to the time of Idris or Osiris, or imagine that it lost its inherent powers, I had a feeling telling me it’s the end of the world. However, I immediately drive away this nightmare that haunts my soul whenever I see stony-hearted Makhioun, Burhami, al-Huwaini and the terrorists whom stones are even softer than them.

I asked God to facilitate the way for me to visit al-Badawi and ad-Dessouqi as their Mawaled[1] are celebrated these days. However, I couldn’t make it to them. I felt sad for this, for facilitation is a sign of giving permission to go. So, I went reading their supplicating prayers and immersing myself in the books talking about their lives hoping that reading may make up some of what I missed in the visit.

In the monasteries, mosques’ yards and over pavements of Sufi figures, the unique fabric of our country is manifested and strength of our national woven-braid appears. A normal human cannot help but getting touched by the hymns chanted in monasteries and churches and Inshad[2] and supplications sung in the mosques’ yards and pavements. I do not exaggerate or imagine when I say that your soul receives, through your ears, the beauty of the Christian hymns in the church and continues listening to the Sufi supplications sung in the mosques’ yards or pavements feeling they complete one another for they both come from the same pure spring.

In Dessouq resides Sidi Ibrahim ad-Dessouqi… ibn Abu al-Magd… ibn Quraish… ibn Muhammed… ibn Abu an-Nagaa… ibn Zayn al-Abdin… ibn Abdel-Khaleq… until we reach Ga’far az-Zakki… ibn Ali… ibn Muhammed al-Gawwad… ibn Ali ar-Reda… ibn Mousa al-Kazem… ibn Ga’far as-Sadeq… ibn Muhammed al-Baker… ibn Ali Zayn al-Abdin… ibn al-Hussain… ibn Ali… ibn Abu Taleb the Hashemite of Quraish.

According to what Ali Pasha Mubarak said in his book titled “Al-Khetat Al-Tawfiqiya” in which he described Egypt’s old and famous cities, Dessouq is “A great city and a capital for a province in Gharbia governorate– it affiliates now to Kafr El Sheikh governorate which was not yet established at the time –looking over the east bank of Rosetta branch of the Nile, lying south to Fuwwah and takes two hours to reach it from there… it contains palaces with windows made of glass and iron including the palace of Abdelaal Bek, council chief of Gharbia, another one for Imam al-Qasabi, Sheikh of Sidi Ahmed al-Badawi mosque, a third for Bassyouni al-Far near to Demera… it also contains eleven Kuttab or places teaching Muslim children about Quran… water stations with one of them belonging to the lady of the high social standing Ain al-Hayat… it also contains three mosques, the biggest and most famous of them is that of Sidi Ibrahim ad-Dessouqi which some Sultans first built then later was widened and re-designed by Sultan Qaitbay… right now– 1293 Hijri calendar –it’s being renovated in the time of Khedive Ismail by me Ali Mubarak.”

In the book titled “At-Tabaqat Al-Kubra” authored by Sidi Abdel-Wahhab al-Sha’rani, Sidi Ibrahim ad-Dessouqi is mentioned in more than 25 pages of the big size; pages filled with very beautiful words written by Imam of Shari’a and truth; Imam ad-Dessouqi. Of his beautiful words I end my article with an excerpt of it saying: “The one who is really close to God regards his good deeds as sins… and if God punished him for his negligence, that would have been fair.” He used to say: “My sons… go seek knowledge… don’t stop and don’t get bored for Allah said to his prophet “And say, “My Lord, increase me in knowledge”… compare this to what we are now, for we are weaker in a different time… you seek more knowledge to know more about God.”

May God bless your soul Abu al-Ainain in your birth memory.

1956… part of wills’ conflict battle

The writer occasionally finds a certain topic rich to write about… once the idea is present, he finds all contexts and phrases flowing in his mind finding its way to the paper or to the keyboard without effort… and if there was anything to do in such case, it’s to control this flow so that the article stays brief, clear and precise.

That’s exactly what happened between me and 1956… I say it in numbers because if I went into determining “which 1956 I mean?”… I’d have written more than what is likely to be said in one side alone.

1956 from my personal perspective is what remained in the memory of a 10-year old boy who lived with his family in a small city; that is the city of Dessouq; city of Sufi spiritual leader; Master Ibrahim Ibn Abol-magd, known as ed-Dessouqi… what remained in that memory is deep and profound enough to represent the whole thing.

As to 1956, from other unlimited perspectives, it’s the shining solid ring of the many rings forming the wills’ battle between the Egyptian people and those forces that kept working on breaking its will…

Also, it’s the battle between the Egyptian people and challenges of poverty, diseases, retardation and subordination… and so, it was the model people that inspired the British history philosopher, Arnold J. Toynbee of the “challenge and response” law… which he saw is the base in understanding the historical movement or understanding the human relation to time… and as long as these challenges exist, the battle of wills’ conflict exists too from the past to the present and reaching also to the future… its forms may vary and its parties could differ but the context is still the same; it’s the tale of people who want to live a decent life in all aspects without assaulting others, but there are parties and circumstances which intersect with this will for unlimited reasons…

And since history is a chain of connected rings extending from the past, through present, to the future, we cannot separate the rings from one another… first, the 1805 ring, when the Egyptian people rose to impose their will over the Ottomans to change the regime ruling then adopted in Egypt… then came the 1882 ring, when cadres of the Egyptian people recruited in the army moved to stand against injustice, discrimination and looting… then the 1919 ring, when the whole people moved to imposed their collective will to achieve independence and democracy… and many rings followed after that in 1935 and 1946 until we reached the 1952 ring when change took place to achieve independence and so came evacuation of British troops in 1954…

At that time, the regime’s orientation was to build and develop our country by controlling our national resources and by having a strong determination to set off from the river towards the sea through three circles; the Arab, African and Islamic ones in addition to the international circle… then this Egyptian role intensified and so came the first Arab unity in 1958… etc… until our present moment where we find ourselves in the middle of wills’ conflict battle on all levels; domestic, regional and international.

Such context requires that we analyze very carefully the other wills intersecting with our Egyptian one… adopting the style of “exchanging seats” or “exchanging roles” may be useful here… meaning to imagine ourselves in the other side or playing the role of the other opposite party and see how he thinks, plans and moves… we may discover that this connected continuous battle requires that we shall be definitely obliged to enhance our tools, disciplines and the way we manage things while keeping our priorities and principles standing before our eyes.

We were in the middle of this battle of wills’ conflict when the international powers in the 19th century found that the Egyptian army movement in 1881 and the demands called for by the leaders of the 1881 revolution could revive the Egyptian role that was undermined by the Convention of London of 1840… without going deep into details justifying my goal, the British interference and occupation was aiming at undermining Egypt’s role and also containing this role in the side of a certain party in the international colonial conflict at that time.

We were involved in such wills’ conflict when we put an end to the corrupt royal autocrat regime… also, we had the British troops’ evacuation treaty signed… then, we revealed our intention to start an independent industrial and agricultural development, cultural and political comprehensive renaissance, Arab unity and supporting liberation movements in the world… and indeed we went into achieving all of them… and building the High Dam was the most prominent achievement of them at that time.

Only then, the old colonization along with the Zionist state realized that we represent a standing danger and maybe more threatening to them in the future despite we didn’t start the assault or seek to engage with any party…

In such regard, I remember the known incident that took place shortly after the July 23 revolution had erupted, when an American political envoy came to Egypt and afterwards went to the Zionist state… when he met Ben-Gurion, Sharett and Meir, he told them: “I have the best and most important news you could wish to hear; that is I sat with Nasser and asked him about his regime priorities and he directly answered: our priority is to get busy building our country to become a strong nation on all levels… and going in a war with Israel is not listed on our agenda…” When the Zionists heard this, they yelled: “it’s the worst news we could ever hear in this century”.

This is a brief of the battle of wills’ conflict … as 1956 was not only a tripartite assault on our country but a ring of the chain representing the Zionist and colonial others’ determination to break our will and destroy our present and future.

The lesson we should learn from 1805 and what followed after until our current moment and the wills’ conflict we have since been through on all three levels; domestic, regional and international, is that we must realize how to manage such conflict scientifically and practically… and also value the powerful cards we have in our hands… as it’s well known that power is not only weapons and ammunition… but along with that and even equally important is how domestically cohesive we are and how much we depend on our national capacity in economy and services…etc… and all those who seek the nation’s interests know well that this is exactly what we need in this era.

I loved to write more completing the scene by talking about the role of words, music and conscience in the battle of wills to reply to the one who dared to say in a public event that: “talking about Egypt’s role is out-dated now and Halim’s songs do not make a role”… these words were said by Abdel-Moniem Said more than a month ago replying to me when I tried to inquire about the possibilities of intersection between the Egyptian and Saudi roles in light of the paper “The Kingdom in 2030” which was demonstrated by him in that occasion.

Regarding what Huda Abdel-Nasser wrote

Those who participated in June 30 revolution, stood against muslim brotherhood long before that and went into the street to support this revolution and stood in the side of president Sisi and the Egyptian army shall start forming groups or spots nationwide to organize a political party holding the name of this revolution and seeking to achieve its goals…

In my opinion, this is the answer to the serious questions asked by Dr. Huda Gamal Abdel-Nasser in her article titled “what are we waiting for?” published in Al Ahram newspaper on October 15, 2016.

This answer is not out of my mind… however, I got from a phrase Dr. Huda mentioned in her article pointing to what happened in France at the beginning of the fifth republic headed by De Gaulle… and how the republic’s supporters started to form the “Union for the republic” party without having president De Gaulle at the head of that party or even as a working member in it.

I realize the difficulty or even impossibility of literally repeating historical experiments because it goes against what some history philosophers call “consequence”… but I believe that getting out of history has a main essential cause; that is not learning history lessons and not reading them carefully and consciously.

In such context, Dr. Huda represented a very important document; that is what president Nasser said when he presented an accurate analysis for a pivotal era of our nation’s history and the experiment of July 23rd, 1952 revolution… he also presented his vision for how to respond to the very complicated domestic, regional and international challenges that, away from exaggeration, is almost identical to our present-time challenges… such document has its own value itself, especially for history scholars and philosophers… but its greatest value lie in making use of it on the current Egyptian political level…

I go back to what I called for when I said that Egyptian nationals; supporters of June 30 revolution shall start establishing the revolution party… I also suggest that the beginning should be a series of planned discussions among all cadres who see themselves wanting and capable of working over such experiment… so that a working program with time schedule and objective contexts can result from such discussions to do the mission.

However, I believe that the most important task in my opinion is interpreting the awareness of all those cadres of the reality of the current Egyptian political movement… meaning since the success of January 25 revolution… because it’s a reality full of undeniable positivity and other negative aspects blocking the way before any effort exerted to come out of the current political work crisis.

My evidence here – that may look pessimistic – is my reading for the reality of all political parties existing right now in Egypt… starting from the communist far Left, passing by the Nasserite Arab-national Left and reaching to the capitalist far Right… such reading reveals clearly the political diseases spread in all those political orientations along with its groups… as if those working in those political groups have adopted the same mechanism of those aiming at dismantling our nation and turning our national fundamentals into illusions.

Here, I think that as we have learnt a historical lesson; that is the difficulty of establishing a political party or group coming from the top authority… we also learn a contemporary political lesson; that is the difficulty to establish a political party or group that is not immune against the endemic diseases spread in our political environment.

Someone may say that this initiative already exist and represented by the group or coalition of “Da’am Masr” or “Supporting Egypt”… and that those belonging to this coalition are supporters of June 30 revolution and are close to its principles… and since they occupy parliamentary positions, they are closer to achieve its goals…

I’m not about to give my opinion of such coalition or its prominent leaders that it happened I know some of them and we have mutual respect… however, what I’m about to do and ask everyone else to consider and work hard to achieve is to come up with a political formula having an organizational frame combining between liquidity that should exist in any political orientation and discipline that should also exist in any political form; whether party or organization… here, we shall talk about an intellectual social economic political context that spreads along all Land of Egypt and that is not limited to a specific mission with a time schedule which is the membership of parliament and legislation authority.

And even if “Supporting Egypt” coalition is in the opinion of its founders and members a representation of June 30 revolution… that shall exceed boundaries of legislative parliamentary mission to broader scopes… meaning as broader as Egypt… and so the suggested new formation shall widen the circle of its membership to include all who are convinced that the way to face the standing challenges is the unity for June 30 republic.

On another side, the experiment and also logic make us wonder about the role of the president regarding what we are talking about… because the man always assures he is just an “individual… an ordinary citizen… like the rest of people… and that he is not a leader…etc.”… however, our reality assures that Sisi is an ordinary citizen… but in the same time, he represents the historical individual and I won’t say “the heroic leader”… I here mean by the historical individual, the citizen that historical circumstances sent him to his nation to bear himself the burden, task and role that no one else can bear… and in a way that necessitate we shall participate with him in bearing such responsibility.

In my opinion, the president role in the suggested political formation shall be the role of the Maestro in the working team… that one who knows the task of every member in his team… starting from tasks of the three authorities and separating between them… and ending by the role of the rest of other national institutions like syndicates, organizations and national efficient figures… It’s even certain that the president already has a formation, even in the form of working teams or cells like those of crises management and project execution… or we wouldn’t have witnessed such magnificent harmony in achieving what was already achieved or under construction in more than one place.

The question now: will those specialized “cells” along with the youth who were qualified for leadership and who became many hundreds or thousands be the infrastructure for that formation that became a necessity and we have been long waiting for?... These were just some questions wandering in the mind of those burdened by the nation’s problems.
